Emergency docs warn children and motorists to be vigilant as summer nears

The emergency and trauma programs at Sudbury Regional Hospital remind motorists that with the excitement of the end of the school year and the advent of summer and holidays to come, children may forget important road safety rules.

In order to avoid tragedy, drivers are encouraged to remain vigilant and keep a watchful eye for students playing along roadways and near schools and stepping off school buses.

Reduce speed near schools and playgrounds, give children on bicycles or any other wheeled toys a wide berth and always stop for a school bus with lights flashing no matter what direction you’re travelling.

“It’s important to take the responsibility that goes with the privilege of having a driver’s licence seriously in order to avoid preventable incidents that may have disastrous consequences,” said Dr. Chris Bourdon, ER medical director.

“Whether it’s done intentionally due to impatience or carelessly due to inattention, it’s completely inexcusable to pass a school bus with its signals flashing or speed in areas where children are playing.”

The emergency and trauma programs encourage you to be a safe driver and protect our community’s children at this time of year.
