Downtown shoppers are saddened to hear that the Salvation Army?s Thrift Shop on Larch Street is closing down this Friday.
All this week there is a closing-out sale.

Maj. Craig Rowe says the store is closing because it is not making a profit. The Army will keep its store on Notre Dame Avenue open. Future plans for the downtown space are being considered.

Sears Home store opens
The new Sears Furniture, Appliances and Home Improvement Showroom opens today (Wednesday) at the corner of The Kingsway and Barrydowne Road.

The design of the 43,000 square foot store is based on extensive consumer research.

The New Sudbury store is part of Sears on-going multi-million dollar national plan, that began in 1995, to offer consumers more selection, service and convenience.

The new store offers a major appliances department with Sears full selection of national-brand major appliances including Sears Kenmore. The remaining 35,000 square feet is devoted to contemporary and traditional furniture, rugs, and accent decor items.

Drunk driver loses licence
A man who struck another vehicle while drunk and injured a woman before attempting to get away was given a hefty fine and had his driver?s licence suspended for 18 months.

Daniel St. Martin, 44, pleaded guilty Thursday to impaired driving causing bodily harm for an incident in Coniston last Feb. 28.

A woman turning from Highway 17 into Coniston was struck at a stop light by the vehicle driven by St. Martin.

After the collision, St. Martin tried to get away, but his vehicle got stuck only feet away and the woman he injured confronted him feeling St. Martin was impaired by alcohol.

A breathalyser test an hour later indicated St. Martin had twice the legal amount of alcohol in his system.

Martel wants election
Political donations to the Conservative Party reveal why the government is in such a rush to privatize hospitals in Ottawa and Brampton, says NDP health critic Shelley Martel.

?Companies that donated to the Conservatives stand to pocket precious public health care dollars in these private hospital deals,? Martel says. ?The entire private hospital process must be halted now.?

A media report last week revealed the three companies bidding on the new Royal Ottawa Hospital all donated to the Tories.

The Nickel Belt MPP called on Premier Ernie Eves to call an election to let voters decide whether they favour public heath care or a for-profit American model.
