Extendicare Countryside on Algonquin Road in Sudbury's South End opened in March, 2024. Construction on the $60-million building began in 2020.

Long-term care residents from Extendicare Falconbridge in Sudbury are in the process of moving into one of the newest Extendicare homes in Canada. The new facility on Algonquin Road — Extendicare Countryside — will be home to 256 residents.

A company spokesperson said the moving-in process has been a significant job and there will be a more formal welcome and ribbon-cutting event held there in the near future.

The new four-storey facility was constructed at a cost of more than $62 million by PCL Construction. Work began in November of 2020, just as the second wave of COVID-19 was sweeping through Canada. Extendicare was also in the process of constructing new multi-unit facilities in the Ottawa and Kingston areas at the same time.

Roughly 200 residents of the Falconbridge facility were able to move into the new Countryside facility during the last week of March. In the coming days and weeks, the company said it expects to welcome more than 50 new residents who have been on the long-term care home wait list.

The company said a key focus at this time is helping everyone to get settled into their new home.

In a March 26 post on X, formerly known as Twitter, showed residents arriving at the Countryside home, welcomed by applauding staff and balloons. You can watch that video below.

A video showcasing the new Extendicare Countryside can also be viewed on the company's main website. The drone video showcases the exterior features of the building.
