Federal funds support monuments to fallen Canadian soldiers

MP Marc Serré visits pair of war memorials on day of poppy campaign launch

Nickel Belt MP Marc Serré announced a total of $22,136 in funding on Oct. 26 to support remembrance initiatives in both St-Charles and Markstay-Warren.

Serré made the announcement on behalf of Seamus O’Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs.

The Municipality of St-Charles received $16,443 to build the St-Charles Cenotaph and Veterans Park. Serré unveiled the Cenotaph monument which honours 51 brave local veterans who have served in the Canadian Forces to protect their country and have made extraordinary sacrifices for its freedom.

The Municipality of Markstay-Warren received $5,693 for the creation of the Markstay War Memorial. The monument was erected in memory of the 132 local men and women who served and those who lost their lives in the service of Canada.

“These community war memorials are one of the many ways we can reconnect with history and proudly commemorate the courageous contributions and sacrifices of our fallen heroes and veterans," said Serré.

"I commend the communities of St.-Charles and Markstay-Warren for their successful efforts in keeping the legacy and memory of local veterans in Nickel Belt alive today, and every day for generations to com."

Both commemorative monuments will honour the memory of local heroes, recognize their achievements and keep their sacrifices alive for the residents of the community and all of Nickel Belt-Greater Sudbury.

This Community War Memorial funding was allocated through Veterans Affairs Canada’s Commemorative Partnership Program.
