Fight for ONTC just beginning: NDP MPPs

New Democrat MPPs say the fight to keep Ontario Northland is just beginning.

“Overall we have made an unfair Liberal budget a little more fair, but there’s more work to do,” Timmins-James Bay NDP MPP Gilles Bisson said in a press release. “The Liberal decision to sell off Ontario Northland was shortsighted and wrong, and we’re going to fight to stop it in its tracks.”

Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof said that the sell-off of Ontario Northland won’t happen immediately, giving Northerners more time to force the government to back off.

“The Liberal decision to sell off Ontario Northland will take away vital transportation links for families, have a devastating impact on jobs, and hurt economic development opportunities,” Vanthof said. “Make no mistake - this fight is just getting started.”

In question period April 24, both NDP MPPs took on the Liberals over the decision.

In response to questions asking why the Liberals subsidize public transportation in southern Ontario but not in the North, Northern Development and Mines Minister Rick Bartolucci, MPP for Sudbury, said that the sell-off will result in an “effective, efficient transportation system,” according to the news release.
