Fire crews extinguish "roofing material" fire at Vale's Copper Cliff smelter

Greater Sudbury fire fighters have extinguished the fire at the Copper Cliff smelter, the city said in a release around 9:30 p.m. on July 27.

Greater Sudbury fire fighters have extinguished the fire at the Copper Cliff smelter, the city said in a release around 9:30 p.m. on July 27. 

 

“Although originally thought to be a conveyor belt, the fire was determined to have been caused by roofing material,” the release said. “All crews have been released. The fire was contained to Vale property and caused no loss of life or human health.”

 

While there were no injuries, the smelter was evacuated as a result of the blaze.

 

In its initial press release, the city said there was no risk to residents and that “it is not necessary to close doors or windows at this time.”
