First Nation pilots heavy equipment operator program

A heavy equipment training program piloted by Atikameksheng Anishnawbek (also known as Whitefish Lake First Nation) graduates its first class today.

A heavy equipment training program piloted by Atikameksheng Anishnawbek (also known as Whitefish Lake First Nation) graduates its first class today.

The program is offered by the First Nation in co-operation with Northern Academy and Naadmaadwiiuk Employment and Training.

The five-week program started July 20. On Friday, the program grads will receive their heavy equipment operator certificates.

Practical training was conducted with the assistance of Atikameksheng Anishnawbek Public Work’s Road Maintenance Plan.

Grads learned to operate excavators, loaders and backhoes and bulldozers. They also received Emergency First Aid training, and earned requirements for Surface Miner Common Core, Fall Protection, Confined Space Awareness and Entry, WHMIS, Ontario Workers Health & and Safety and Customer Service.
