Burpees, back squats, tire lifts, sled pulls – whatever you throw at them, it won’t matter. CrossFitters know it’s a piece of cake compared to the fight of a cancer patient.

That’s why on Saturday, June 4, 20 teams from CrossFit gyms across Ontario will be coming to Sudbury to compete in the fourth Annual Battle Beyond the Barbell cancer fundraiser in support of the Janis Foligno Foundation.

“The true strength of the CrossFit Community is most evident when it comes to raising awareness and funds for a good cause” said Adam Ball, CrossFit Sudbury owner.

“Battle Beyond The Barbell has grown significantly over the past three years. Everyone has such a big heart in this community – the support and generosity is overwhelming.”

This event has raised over $11,000 for the Janis Foligno Foundation in just three years. It started off as just an in-house competition in 2013 raising $2,000.

Last year they welcomed teams from Sault Ste. Marie, Timmins, Espanola, Manitoulin Island, Toronto and Ottawa, raising $5,300.

“It means so much to our family that CrossFit Sudbury is putting on yet another fundraiser to benefit the Janis Foligno Foundation,” said NHL star Nick Foligno, captain of the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“The money raised from this event has pushed us toward our goal of helping people in our community live healthy lives, which I know is in-line with CrossFit Sudbury’s mission.”

This year CrossFit Sudbury opened 20 spots for teams of four to register. Those spots were filled in less than an hour of opening the registration.

Along with cheering on the competitors, there will be a BBQ, bake sale and a raffle that will include some signed NHL memorabilia. All funds raised will go to the Janis Foligno Foundation, which supports various Cancer initiatives and charities within the Sudbury Community.
