The following statement has been issued by Walmart's senior manager of corporate affairs, Anika Malik:

"The Sudbury South Supercentre located at 2416 Long Lake Rd. is closed until further notice. We invite our customers to visit our other Sudbury-area stores while we conduct an investigation.

"For customers requiring access to prescriptions in our pharmacy, our team is on-call and accepting phone calls to help patients fill scripts at a nearby location."

Original story:

There were some disappointed Christmas shoppers Monday evening after the Walmart in the South End was forced to close when a pipe broke in the ceiling above some of the grocery aisles, causing flooding.

Greater Sudbury Fire Services was called out to the scene at 7:26 p.m.

“We responded and shut off the water,” said Platoon Chief Mike Valiquette. “Then they closed the store for the rest of the night to get rid of the water, and they were supposed to open back up this morning.”

There were some reports on social media of the roof collapsing, but Valiquette said all that happened was some ceiling tiles fell down. Nobody was injured in the incident.

Sudbury.com has attempted to contact Walmart officials to find out more about the incident. An employee of the store confirmed the South End Walmart is still closed this morning.
