A well-established political contender has entered the mayoral race in Greater Sudbury, with former Liberal MP Paul Lefebvre announcing his intention today to seek office.

The official nomination period for the Oct. 24 municipal election begins on Monday, at which time candidacies will become official.

Lefebvre was first elected as Sudbury’s MP in 2015 and announced last year that he would not seek re-election.

“Both before and after I left the MP’s office, I heard loud and clear that Greater Sudbury needs experienced leadership and a strong vision for the future,” he said in a media release issued today.

“I worked hard to put Sudbury back on the map in Ottawa, and now I want to continue that work at Tom Davies Square. I want to bring the experience, the leadership skills, the connections and the vision to move Sudbury forward and fulfill its potential.”

The three pillars of his campaign will be:

  • Economic development and creating good paying jobs for all Sudburians
  • Renewing and investing in Greater Sudbury’s infrastructure
  • Building public confidence and transparency in the City of Greater Sudbury and in city council

“I live in Greater Sudbury. I’ve raised a family here, coached sports here, run businesses here. I know the challenges of running community organizations and of meeting a payroll,” Lefebvre said in the release.

“I have worked in Ottawa, I have connections across governments and throughout industry. I have the experience and the desire to lead Greater Sudbury into its next and greatest chapter .. and I am looking forward to working with all Sudburians to meet the challenge.”

Also seeking the mayor’s seat is incumbent Brian Bigger, who is seeking a third term, former Ward 4 councillor Evelyn Dutrisac and local homelessness advocate Bob Johnston.
