A free skin cancer clinic hosted by local dermatologist Dr. Lyne Giroux, the Canadian Dermatology Association and the Sudbury and District Health Unit will take place June 5.

The clinic, located at 336 Pine St., Suite 400, Sudbury, will be open to the public from 5-8 p.m. on a first-come, first-served basis.

In addition to skin-cancer screening, those at the clinic will be able to receive answers to their questions about protecting their skin from harmful UV radiation.

This free event includes light snacks and refreshments.

Skin cancer is on the rise, according to a press release from the health unit. The good news is that skin cancer is preventable.

Early detection is directly linked to a high survival rate, according to the dermatology association. Since melanoma — a form of skin cancer — is clearly visible on the outer surface of the skin, you can learn the early signs of melanoma and how to monitor your skin for any changes.

Sun damage doesn’t go away, it adds up. Excessive exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun and tanning beds plays a leading role in the development of melanoma (the most serious form of skin cancer) and is the most preventable cause of this disease.

Roughly 90 per cent of melanomas are associated with severe UV exposure and sunburns over a lifetime.

When going outside, protect yourself by being sun safe. Wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30+, sunglasses, a wide-brimmed hat and protective clothing, the press release said.

If possible, plan outdoor activities earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid peak UV times, and seek out or create your own shade during outdoor activities.

If you or someone you know would like more information about skin cancer and how to get screened, contact the Sudbury and District Health Unit at 705-522-9200, ext. 336 or www.sdhu.com.
