Community volunteers whose “generosity and caring nature are what helps maintain the strong fabric that holds our community together” were honoured at the annual Greater Sudbury Civic Awards ceremony April 18.

The event was hosted by Cindy Dent, Greater Sudbury’s city manager of recreation services, who told those in attendance the night is a favourite celebration for staff of leisure services.

“We are privileged to recognize community volunteers who go above and beyond to make our community such a better place,” said Dent at the ceremony.

“Every day we see the work being done by our volunteers and our community. Whether the contributions come from an individual or group, your collective generosity and caring nature are what helps maintain the strong fabric that holds our community together.”

The event was held at the soon-to-be named Michael Vagnini Hall in the T.M. Davies Community Centre in Lively, presented by the City of Greater Sudbury to individuals and groups who volunteer within the community, rewarding their meritorious service.

A reception for the winners began the night, and as each award was presented, winners were greeted by Mayor Paul Lefevbre.

He told attendees that though previously held in Sudbury, last year at the Northern Watersports Centre on Ramsey Lake, the ceremony will now be held in different locations across Greater Sudbury.

Lefevbre spoke to the crowd before hitting the stage to welcome winners and take photographs. “We are so fortunate in Greater Sudbury to be characterized by a spirit of generosity,” he said. “So many centres across this community thrive because of the passion, energy and expertise of our volunteers. The individuals and groups we are honoring this evening have made inspiring and lasting contributions to the lives of residents in so many different ways.”
