Geotechnical work taking place Thursday for Junction East

A geotechnical investigation is taking place off of Shaughnessy Street between Wacky Wings and Alexandria’s Restaurant on Thursday

A geotechnical investigation is taking place off of Shaughnessy Street B Parking Lot, located between Wacky Wings and Alexandria’s Restaurant on Thursday.

“Locates for the work will be installed prior to this date and will not affect parking,” according to a statement from the city. “The contractor will be on site early on Oct. 13 to section off the space required. Work is expected to be completed by the end of the day.”

The geotechnical work is taking place to accommodate parking needs near the Junction East Cultural Hub site – a $98.5-million library/art gallery building city council greenlit in June. The land acquisition for parking was baked into the price presented to city council.

The Junction East Cultural Hub is slated to be located across the street from the parking lot undertaking geotechnical work on Oct. 13, on what is currently parking for the Sudbury Theatre Centre. An Enbridge gas line was relocated from the site last month to make room for the building.

Unstable ground on the proposed site was discovered during earlier ground testing, which contributed to a recent cost escalation. Ian Wood, the city’s director of strategic initiatives, communications and citizen services, said the issue is commonplace downtown.

While geotechnical work is taking place, monthly parking pass holders may park in other municipal lots that offer monthly parking.

Still conceptual, the work taking place at the direction of city council to progress with the Junction East Cultural Hub is intended to bring the design to a stage where the project is able to be brought to tender. This process is expected to continue until mid-November, at which time the city team behind the effort will develop a tender package for release early in the new year.

There are four prequalified bidders for this project from a total of 10 companies to take initial interest in the project. They include:

  • EllisDon Corporation (Mississauga)
  • Bird Construction Group (Mississauga)
  • Aquicon Construction Co. Ltd. (Brampton)
  • PCL Constructors Northern Ontario Inc. (Sudbury)
