Get off your buns and join Sudbury's burger wars

Sudbury restaurants say you don't need to be a clown or a king to enjoy some of the best burgers in town and to help raise money for charity

Organizers were pleased to announce that Burger Wars Month was back on in Sudbury for August. The event is being held to benefit the Northern Cancer Foundation. On hand for the announcement were, left to right, Anthony Keating Chief Development Officer for the Health Sciences North (HSN) foundations; Jana Schilkie, event organizer from Jana Hospitality Consulting; Mitch Speigel event organizer, and Yolanda Thibeault from HSN.

It's Burger Wars month in Sudbury, and while this story about it will let you catch up, you might relish the idea of getting involved and helping out.

The idea is that local restaurants have joined the effort and have agreed to donate $1 from the sale of selected burgers to beef up funding for the Northern Cancer Foundation.

Sudbury residents are invited to try out as many burger creations as they want at local eateries and to let your imagination run wild. Some people like a plain burger, while others would argue that adding cheese tastes pretty gouda. (Hey, we’re on a roll).

For others it's all about the bacon, or... bakin' the bread.

The idea appears to have come to Sudbury via the East Coast, according to local organizer Mitch Speigel, who explained that his daughter and her family live in Wolfville, Nova Scotia, a beautiful town that he visits often.

"On one visit, we arrived in the middle of a 'war,' a 'Burger War'. Every restaurant, and there are many, had a poster and tent cards advertising their special burger. For every one of these burgers sold, a dollar would be going to a local children's charity."

Spiegel said he was told the idea for the Nova Scotia event was borrowed from an event in Prince Edward Island and he thought it would be cool to "re-borrow" the idea for Sudbury.

The previous Burger Wars month was held back in 2019. At that time the event was won by Ricky Lee's Da Bomb Diner.

After some grilling, owner Rick McCutcheon said he was pleased as a pickle.

“Winning the burger wars in 2019 was a great honour. We had only been open for less than a year. It was a great experience. Sudbury is very lucky to have so many great chefs in this city all from different backgrounds. This event is truly a community event where everyone wins. The restaurants, the customers, the charity. Go out and try as many as you can. May the best burger win!!”

It might sound cheesy, but lettuce get this patty started. Just step out and holler where's the beef?
