For their 2020 Annual Financial Report, the City of Greater Sudbury has received the Canadian Award for Financial Reporting.

This is the ninth consecutive year the city has received an award from the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada.

The report in question can be found online at greatersudbury.ca/financialreports, alongside other financial reports issued by the city.

“This award is a significant accomplishment and a true testament to the hard work and dedication of City staff,” Mayor Brian Bigger said in a media release issued by the city. “It speaks volumes about the financial integrity of our organization and the ongoing commitment to innovation, openness and accountability. I would like to congratulate the staff team that contributed to the development of this essential annual document.”

In addition to this being their ninth consecutive award for Financial Reporting, the city has also received five consecutive Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards.

“This award reflects external validation on the quality and completeness of our reporting from a group of peers across North America, and I am very proud of the team that produced this document,” city CAO Ed Archer said in a media release.

“Developing an annual financial report that tells our story in a transparent, accessible and engaging way is one of the many ways we work to build trust with residents and establish our City as a leader in municipal governance.”

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada is a non-profit professional association that serves nearly 18,000 government finance professionals in the two nations, according to the city’s media release.

Its Canadian Award for Financial Reporting program was established to encourage municipal governments to publish high-quality financial reports and to provide peer recognition and technical guidance for officials preparing these reports. Reports are judged by a national review committee to meet the high standards of the program.
