To celebrate the good news that the Laurentian University greenspace will not be sold, a walk in the greenspace will be held Saturday, Oct. 21.

The event, billed as a chance for the community to come together for “thank-you’s, treats, inspiration and a walk through the greenspace,” takes place starting at 2 p.m. at the Laurentian beach.

Come a little early to grab some hot chocolate or coffee from Old Rock Coffee, a cupcake from Beard’s Coffee Bar and Bakery or a local apple from the market, and pick up your own #saveLUgreenspace button. Bring a beach chair or blanket if you like.

Gather to thank the many many community members who joined the effort to protect our cherished greenspace, and to thank the decision makers who listened to the community.

Jody Tverdal (administrative lead, office of the president and vice-chancellor at Laurentian University), MP Viviane Lapointe, MPP’s Jamie West and France Gélinas, and Deputy Mayor Joscelyne Landry-Altman have confirmed their attendance.

Hear from community leader Bob Rogers about the start of the LU trails, and how they were built by the community, for the community.

Learn from local artists Elyse Portal and Emilio Portal about how this greenspace they love so much nourishes their creative process as artists.

At 2:30 p.m., you are invited on a guided greenspace walk, with some sharing along the way.

This short hike starts and ends at the beach, following a loop route to Bennett Lake, via Anne Marie’s lookout.

Enjoy some of the wonderful views and special places we love in the LU greenspace.

Community members can access the event via the Ramsey Lake multi-use trail, transit route #3, or by motor vehicle. Free parking is available at the small parking lot by the access to the Loach's Road extension, and at the Ben Avery parking lot.

“We invite the community to celebrate the safeguarding of our beloved LU greenspace, thank everyone for their heart and hard work over the past few years, and keep the momentum going for permanent protection for this special place,” said Naomi Grant, Chair of Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury.

“The LU greenspace and trails means so much to the community, and we are truly grateful for this positive outcome. Come celebrate with us!”

Coalition for a Liveable Sudbury co-ordinated the community campaign to save the LU greenspace when it was under threat from LU’s insolvency.
