Provincial police are warning residents to be wary after a woman was pulled over by a person impersonating a police officer.

The woman told police she was pulled over on Highway 17 on April 8 at 9:33 a.m. Police said she was followed by an older grey Nissan Altima, which had a loud muffler, with emergency lights on the dashboard.

Believing it to be a police officer, she pulled over.

A Caucasian man, described to be in his 30s, about 5-8 with brown hair, small goatee and casually dressed, approached the driver's side of the vehicle and requested her documents.

When the man displayed what appeared to be an edged weapon in one hand, the woman drove away without being injured.

The suspect vehicle was last seen travelling on Long Lake Road, towards Sunnyside Road in the City of Greater Sudbury.

“The OPP wishes to remind the public that citizens may ask a police officer to provide the name of their service, detachment, badge number, warrant card and rank,” said a news release. “The officer should be able to provide this information without delay.”
