Thanks to the generous donation of a Sudbury family, the Sudbury Heart and Soul Campaign is $500,000 closer to its goal of $17.5 million.

The Memorial site board proudly showed off a cheque for $500,000 Wednesday from the estate of Onni and Aune Leppala.

"The Leppalas chose to bequeath their estate to the Memorial Hospital in recognition of the excellent cardiac care provided to Aune Leppala," said Memorial Hospital board chair Joan Babij.

The donation will be used for cardiac care services in the new Sudbury Regional Hospital.

"We were very honoured to receive this donation and we are pleased to announce the Sudbury Regional Hospital has agreed to name its new Cardiac Care Waiting Area in memory of the Leppalas," said Babij.

"The heart and soul of this campaign comes from people like the Leppalas," said Gerry Lougheed Jr., chair of the campaign. "Their estate provides a valuable gift for the future. The people of this community will remember their generosity every time they visit the Leppala Cardiac Care Waiting Area."
