Greater Sudbury offers financial assistance through Residential Inflow and Infiltration Subsidy (RIISP) to eligible residents who have experienced or who could potentially experience flooding of their basements from sewer backups during times of heavy precipitation, spring thaw or system blockages.

Beginning this year, the City will rebate owners 75 per cent of the total cost or up to a maximum of $1,500 for a backwater valve, and 75 per cent of the total cost or up to a maximum of $1,875 for a sump pump and pit. Two rain barrels and four eavestrough extenders are also included with the subsidy of up to 50% of the invoiced cost to a maximum of $60 per barrel.*

The partial reimbursements to property owners also go to cover costs associated with inspections to ensure you are compliant with regulations, solutions to help minimize the potential for municipal sewer backup into your home and devices to help direct water away from foundations and that protect basements from flooding.

You can find out if you are eligible for the financial assistance or apply for the program on the city’s website.

*An early version of this story included incorrect information provided by the city, that stated the additional supplies were at no charge. That has been corrected.
