Junction Creek Stewardship Committee is holding a tree-planting event in Garson on Oct. 2.

The event takes place from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Planting supplies, training, and light refreshments will be provided at the event. Participants are asked to register online here.

The local environmental charity has received funding from a TD Tree Day Grant to plant 300 native trees and shrubs along a section of Junction Creek in Garson, and is looking for volunteers to help.

The goal of the planting event is to restore the shoreline of Junction Creek, an urban stream that flows through Greater Sudbury, and build resilience to mitigate flooding and climate change.

This event will benefit the neighbourhood and local environment, including connected waterbodies and communities downstream.

Why is shoreline vegetation important? Trees and shrubs along the shore create a buffer system which supports healthy waterways by filtering contaminated runoff, preventing erosion, providing habitat, and cooling the surrounding environment in the summer.

This is especially important for brook trout, which require cooler water temperatures. Tree-planting is also a climate change solution and is part of the City of Greater Sudbury’s effort to reach net-zero carbon dioxide emissions by 2050.

With COVID-19 precautions and protocols in place, executive director Miranda Virtanen is looking forward to welcoming volunteers this fall.

“The level of involvement and appreciation that residents have for restoring the environment is an inspirational trait of the Greater Sudbury community, and the driving force behind the success of regreening efforts and the prosperity of the city,” she said.

“The achievements we have made together are phenomenal. It is always heart-warming to see the enthusiasm and excitement of participants of all ages during our restoration activities.”
