After raising nearly $39,000 for the Heart & Stroke Foundation through its Jump Rope for Heart program over the past three years, Holy Cross Catholic Elementary School now has the title of the area's top fundraising school.

This year, the school raised a total of $9,536. A student at the school, Rebecca Chau, is the area's top Jump Rope fundraiser, having brought in $1,296 herself. This is the second year she's held that title.

For more than 30 years, Jump Rope for Heart has given Canadian youth the opportunity to learn about healthy eating, the importance of physical activity, and the benefits of giving back to your community, while contributing millions of dollars to vital heart and stroke research, a press release said.

Since 1995, local schools have fundraised more than $2.3 million towards lifesaving research through annual participation in Jump Rope for Heart. This year the campaign raised more than $100,000 in Sudbury /Manitoulin Districts.

“We receive overwhelming support for this program year after year,” said Cori-Lynn Lemaitre, Heart & Stroke’s area co-ordinator for the Sudbury/Manitoulin District, in the press release.

“We understand we are one of many charities that enlist the help of our local schools, and are so grateful that they continue to come back to Heart & Stroke. With the rates of childhood obesity and diabetes continuing to climb, we feel it is increasingly important to teach students about active living and encourage consistent healthy habits from an early age.

“We couldn’t do this without the support of teachers, administrators and parents.”
