HSNF donates $50,000 to PET Scan fund

'Poetic' that HSNF among last donors to contribute to cause - NCF executive director

Members of the Northern Cancer Foundation and Health Sciences North Foundation gathered in the lobby of the lobby of the Northeast Cancer Centre on Jan. 18 to recognize a generous $50,000 donation made by HSNF to the Sam Bruno PET scan fund.

Sam Bruno PET steering committee member Brenda Tassaro was also on hand for the ceremony to help unveil a crystal plaque on the cancer centre's donor wall alongside HSNF board chair Alex Patterson.

"HSN Foundation is proud to have been involved with the PET Scan initiative from its inception," said Patterson. "Congratulations to the NCF for continuing with this important cause and bringing the PET scan to our hospital."

In November 2016, the NCF announced that two anonymous donors contributed $500,000 each to the Sam Bruno PET Scan Fund. These donations combined with numerous other donations and pledges from community members and Northeastern Ontario municipalities helped the fund reach its $3.5 million goal.

"The donation by HSNF is a special one. Back when the PET Scan group started fundraising, it was with the HSNF," said Tannys Laughren, executive director of the NCF.

"It's poetic that they would be among the last donors to contribute to Sam's cause."

Donations made to the Sam Bruno PET Scan Fund in excess of the $3.5 million goal will be used to grant funds to patients from the North travelling to Sudbury for PET Scan appointments.
