Hundreds enjoy Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation powwow

Annual gathering near sacred grounds on Whitefish Lake brings friends and family members from across Northern Ontario

Hundreds of residents from Sudbury, Manitoulin Island and other parts of Northeastern Ontario gathered at the Atikameksheng Anishnawbek First Nation powwow near Naughton on the weekend.

And they brought perfect weather with them as warm sunshine and easy breezes welcomed the crowds  at the sacred grounds at Whitefish Lake Park Beach.

The powwow featured a lengthy grand entry that was held at noon, and well as a gathering of friends and family members from other First Nations around the North.

Along with the grand entry that featured elders and First Nations representation from across the North, there were also several drummers from communities around the North.

The event also featured dozens of dancers wearing traditional regalia and performing tradional dances, such as jingle dress,  for the crowds. Residents were also pleased to enjoy food choices from several vendors who were also set up at the event. A community feast was held later Sunday afternoon.

The event also featured the Black Lodge Singers at the host drum and the Black Bull Moose at the traditional host drum.
