Huntington celebrates season by giving

For years, Huntington University has celebrated the Christmas season by holding a tree-lighting ceremony.

But the educational institution is starting a new tradition this year. From now on, it'll be making a donation to a local charity each Christmas.

This year's recipient is Maison Vale Hospice.

“For over 50 years, Huntington University has been dedicated to making teaching and learning part of the larger community,” said Huntington president Kevin McCormick, in a press release.

“Our staff, faculty and students embody a passion for giving back to Sudbury and its’ many inspirational community agencies. Maison Vale Hospice was selected as the first recipient of Huntington University's community award program, given its five years of tireless dedication to the citizens of Sudbury.

“The hospice is truly a place of peace and passion ensuring that lives are honoured and families supported. The entire university community is proud to be able to support the amazing work of the Masion Vale Hospice.”

Maison Vale Hospice board chair and Northern Life publisher Abbas Homayed expressed appreciation for Huntington's gift.

“I am genuinely thrilled to be accepting this generous donation from Huntington University on behalf of Maison Vale Hospice,” he said.

“This donation is testament to the caring role Huntington plays in our community. This is the season of giving, sharing, caring and good will and the need to provide warmth and support for families at Maison Vale Hospice at this time of the year is particularly poignant. Thank you.”

Huntington's Christmas Tree lighting ceremony — involving 3,000 lights on a 45-foot-tall evergreen tree — takes place on the university's campus starting at 5 p.m. Dec. 2.
