Environment Canada has issued a winter travel advisory for the Greater Sudbury area and vicinity.

Bands of snow off Lake Huron and Georgian Bay are affecting the Greater Sudbury vicinity and are expected to do so on and off today, Environment Canada said this morning.

The wind is gusting up to 75 km/h in some of these bands of snow. While heavy snowfall amounts and prolonged poor visibility are not anticipated, Environment Canada is warning drivers to expect brief but near total whiteout conditions, making travel hazardous at times.

If you don’t have to go out, stay home.

The cold temperatures have created slippery conditions in various parts of the city today. Greater Sudbury Police Service is warning drivers to slow down, be patient and drive to the conditions.

Farther afield, the OPP say Highway 17 between Wawa and Batchawana will remain closed and they don't know when it will re-open as conditions continue to be poor. Highway 17 between Spanish and Blind River has been re-opened though.
