Only a month into his new role, Indonesia's consul general in Toronto paid an official visit to Sudbury on Thursday.

Hadi Sapto Pambrastoro visited the Nickel City to help promote Indonesia's culture, bring more attention to the local Indonesian community, and promote more trade with Sudbury.

“Sudbury is important to us,” he said.

Indonesia is a major mining jurisdiction and one of the world's top nickel producers.

Pambrastoro said there are good opportunities for more trade between his country and regions like Sudbury with regards to the mining sector.

As part of his itinerary for the day, Pambrastoro visited Sudbury's Multicultural and Folk Arts Association.

“It's really an honour for us that he's here,” said Dr. Remi Ogundimu, the association's president.

One of the association's mandates is to help newcomers to Sudbury settle in the community.

Multicultural and Folk Arts Association has played a big role in helping the city's new refugees from Syria integrate into the community.

It is also well known for its annual Multicultural Canada Day Celebration, which features traditional music and dance from a number of countries around the world, along with food from Sudbury's various multicultural communities.

Cuisine from Sudbury's small Indonesian community was on display for the first time at the Sudbury Arena on Canada Day 2016.
