A special weather statement is in effect for Greater Sudbury and vicinity today, with 15 to 30 millimetres of rain expected to fall.
“Rain has begun to fall in Northeastern Ontario as a slow-moving low pressure system approaches the region from the south,” a weather statement issued by Environment Canada at 5:22 a.m. said. “The rain is expected to persist for much of the day before tapering off this evening.”
The heavy rain and high winds that started in Georgian Bay and central Ontario this morning is causing power outages over a wide swath of the province.
More than 1,000 Hydro One customers on Manitoulin Island are out of power, as are more than 2,800 Hydro One customers in Barrie and another 1,172 in Algoma.
