Federal NDP leader Jack Layton is in Sudbury Jan. 27 and Jan. 28 to show his support for striking members of Steelworkers Local 6500 and speak with students at Laurentian University.

Layton is coming to town to discuss local job situations as well as promote the economy.

“At a time when Canada is struggling to escape the recession, and people are having trouble making ends meet, the labour dispute at Vale Inco is undermining relations among members of the community,” Layton said in a news release. “This shows how urgent it is to bring in anti-scab legislation, and what a vital role Parliament plays in the lives of all Canadians. In the meantime, I appeal to both sides to return to the bargaining table in good faith.”

Layton spoke to strikers at their Brady Street hall (in the old Loeb Store) around 11 a.m. earlier today. He will visit the Garson Mine picket line tomorrow, Jan. 28, before noon.

An e-mail sent out by the Facebook group Strikeforce 6500 said that “Jack is one of our most influential supporters, and he's coming to Sudbury on Wednesday to find out what he can do to help. If you have questions or comments, come on out to the hall and talk to him.”
