The soon-to-be-run race for the Sudbury NDP candidate nomination is going to get a little tighter today.

This evening, Jamie West, president of the Sudbury and District Labour Council, is expected to announce that he will be seeking the party's nomination for the 2018 provincial election.

West is expected to make his intentions public this evening during a press conference at the labour council offices on Elm Street.

Holding a BA from Laurentian University in psychology, he has been president of the labour council since 2013.

West has been on the labour council's executive since 2010, having gotten involved with the organization during USW Local 6500's year-long strike against Vale.

A smelter flash furnace operator by trade, he was an activist during the labour dispute, working with a group called Building Power, which organized protests and communication with the union's membership.

Shortly after he was hired on at Inco (now Vale), in 2002, he joined the joint health and safety committee. He's worked full-time for the Steelworkers as a health and safety rep for workers in Vale's Copper Cliff smelter.

The Sudbury and District Labour Council, founded in 1957, promotes labour issues in the community.

West will be the second candidate to throw his hat in the ring. On April 20, Beth Mairs became the first to announce she would be seeking to be the party's candidate in Sudbury.

Sudbury.com will bring you more on this story this evening following West's announcement.
