Best known as the founder, lead singer, songwriter and guitarist of the punk rock band Against Me! Laura Jane Grace will be performing on September 15 at Place des arts. Doors open and 7 p.m. and the show begins at 8 p.m., presented by Up Here, in collaboration with MODO LIVE and Programme.

Grace is not only a power-house musician, but after coming out as a transgender woman in 2012, she has since become an outspoken advocate for transgender awareness.

A release from Up Here, the Sudbury music festival that is hosting the show as one of their first outside the usual weekend dates features a quote from Grace describing her recently released EP, At War With The Silverfish. “These are songs of late-night madness and loneliness, orphan songs that came wandering in looking to feed like insects,” she said.

Half recorded at Grace’s TinyQuietStudio in Chicago and half recorded at Electric Eel in St. Louis, and mixed by her Devouring Mothers bandmate Marc Hudson, At War With The Silverfish finds Grace in a range of “stripped-back, poignant modes that amount to an honest and holistic account of our shared humanity,” reads the release.

Opening for Grace are Winnipeg-based punk duo, Mobina Galore. With Jenna Priestner on guitar and Marcia Hanson on drums, and both adding vocals, the two are now three albums into their decade-long career. Their newest single, “Whiskey Water”, was released April 2022 and the Up Here release states that it showcases “a fresh sound while continuing the band’s signature of crafting unapologetically heavy, wildly dynamic songs that explore life’s peaks and valleys with discerning emotional clarity.”

Also featured is Lande Hekt from Bristok, UK. With her debut album barely a year old, 2022 sees Hekt armed with a new collection of song-form vignettes and musings on her life and experiences. Her second solo album ‘House Without a View’ will be released Sept. 23 via Get Better Records in North America and on her own Prize Sunflower Records.
