Three experts from Laurentian University will the public understand this year's stock market crash Nov. 12 in a discussion called, "The crash of 2008: what happened, what it means and what can be done?"
The discussion will take place from 3 to 4:30 p.m. in room C-309 of the Classroom Building.
Dr. Homayoon Shalchian of the school of commerce and administration will share his knowledge about the exotic financial instruments that have contributed to the crisis.
Dr. K.V. Nagarajan of the department of economics will explain the implications for people's living standards.
Dr. Brian MacLean of the department of economics will compare the U.S. housing bubble to the Japanese housing bubble of the late 1980s and discuss the relevance of policy lessons from Japan's experience.
Moderating the panel will be Dr. David Robinson of the department of economics.
The bursting of the U.S. housing bubble has triggered a global financial crisis of such magnitude that it has evoked comparisons to the Great Depression. Already the International Monetary Fund has forecast a global recession for 2009.
In Canada, the loonie has fallen sharply relative to the greenback and pension funds are suffering large losses.
Presentations will be followed by a lengthy period for questions and comments.
