'Legacy' horse for disabled riders needs $10K dental surgery

Ashley Carlucci loved being part of the Sudbury Therapeutic Riding Program. The program allows people with disabilities — whether they be physical or cognitive — the chance to ride horses.

But sadly, the young woman's years on earth were short. She became ill, passing away four years ago, at the age of 22.

A few years before she died, though, Carlucci was granted a wish by the Sunshine Foundation of Canada, which makes dreams come true for children challenged by severe physical disabilities or life-threatening illnesses.

She decided she wanted her own horse, and to will the animal to the Sudbury Therapeutic Riding Program upon her death.

That's how Diablo the 10-year-old quarterhorse came to be one of four horses used for the program. The horse brought the young woman a lot of joy in her final years, said Carlucci's mom, Sherry Mongeau.

And now, she said she loves seeing how much joy Diablo brings other clients of the program. “It really is a legacy for her,” Mongeau said.

Unfortunately, though, Diablo has developed some tooth issues. He needs to travel to Southern Ontario next month, where he'll have two teeth pulled under anaesthetic in two separate surgeries.

The cost? About $10,000.

That's why the Sudbury Therapeutic Riding Program is asking for donations to cover the horse's dental surgery.

Rachelle Poirier, the program's president, calls Diablo her “Cadillac,” as his withers are narrow, making it easier for those with disabilities to ride him. He's also tall, so he can carry both adults and children.

More importantly, though, Diablo is Carlucci's legacy, she said. “It's not everybody who would think of others,” she said. “In her dying wish, she wanted a horse, and she willed that horse to help others.”

Those interested in donating to fund Diablo's dental surgery are asked to send e-transfers to [email protected] (don't forget the password).

Another option is to send a cheque or money order to Sudbury Therapeutic Riding Program, PO Box 2212, Station A, Sudbury, ON, P3A 4S1.

Donations can also be dropped off at Greenhawk Harness and Equestrian Supplies on The Kingsway. Alternatively, you can phone 705-562-2353 or 705-690-4433. All donations over $20 will receive a tax receipt.
