The Canadian Cancer Society is gearing up for its 19th annual Relay for Life fundraiser.

The organization is kicking off the campaign tonight at Twiggs Coffee Roasters by selling luminaries and providing live entertainment. The luminaries will be set up on the patio at Twiggs, overlooking The Kingsway, and lighting up the night sky.

Luminaries are an important aspect of the Relay for Life event. People purchase luminaries to honour those who lost their fight against cancer, and to honour those still fighting.

Luminaries are $5 each.

MacKenzie Dempster, volunteer communications and outreach lead with the Canadian Cancer Society, said people are starting to get excited about the Relay for Life event, taking place June 15 at the Laurentian University track.

Opening ceremonies are at 7 p.m. followed by the Survivor Lap. The Luminary Ceremony happens at 10 p.m., and the Canadian Cancer Society wants to sell more luminaries than ever before.

“Money raised through Relay for Life funds promising cancer research, community support services and other important work so that fewer Canadians are touched by cancer,” she said.
