After more than 12 hours in labour, Jyoti Vyas gave birth to Greater Sudbury's newest resident.

Born at 12:06 a.m. on Jan. 1, and weighing in at seven pounds, five ounces, little Siya Vyas is the city's New Year's baby.

She came a little early, however, with a due date of Jan. 4.

Siya means goddess in Hindi.

This is the first child for Jyoti and her husband, Nehal.

“It was amazing,” Jyoti said. “When I first saw her, I cried. It's all like a dream. I've just been staring at her. We're just so happy she's in the world now.”

Jyoti is an international student at Cambrian College. She's enrolled in the early childhood education program. Nehal works at Extendicare and Tim Hortons.

They've called Greater Sudbury home for the past two years.
