One Greater Sudbury apartment building has announced it will not be handing out treats this Halloween as an effort to keep its tenants safe.

Christel Brandle, the superintendent of The Lively Apartments, told Sudbury.com that she understands the kids will be disappointed, but she is looking out for her tenants, most of whom are over the age of 80.

“We’ve been so lucky so far that nothing has happened in this building,” Brandle said. “Our population is over 200 people and we haven’t had one incident yet and I would like to keep it that way.”

In past years, the building, which is located at 1 Coronation Blvd. in Lively, would treat upwards of 700 kids on Halloween night by handing out candy in the lobby.

Due to restricted space, Brandle said it is not possible to keep everyone six feet apart.

While trick or treaters are being asked not to enter the building this Halloween, kids are still welcome to come visit family members who live there.

“I’m not banning children from the building. If you want to come see grandma in your costume, that’s fine. We just won’t be handing out treats in the building.”

“I understand that this is going to be disappointing to our local kids but unfortunately this year we have to take the precautions.”

“I need to know that my people are safe.”

Premier Doug Ford recently voiced concerns about trick or treating in COVID-19 hot spots and recommended that residents of Toronto, Ottawa, Peel Region and York Region not go door-to-door this Halloween.
