What was intended as straightforward way to honour an Olympic gold medalist is turning out again to be a bit more complicated.

In June, the city announced that Turner Drive in Lively would be renamed Meagan Duhamel Drive, in honour of the Olympic champion figure skater who hails from the community.

But it turns out there's an existing Duhamel Drive, so a staff report in late June recommended it be called Meagan Duhamel Street to avoid confusion.

At city council Tuesday, Ward 2 Coun. Michael Vagnini said Turner Drive was named in honour of Leonard Turner, who was town mayor from 1958-1972.

Ward 8 Coun. Al Sizer said Duhamel was reluctant to be honoured by removing the name from a street named in honour of someone else.

“I'm not trying to put a spoke in anyone's plans,” Sizer said.

But Vagnini proposed that another road, A Street, be renamed after Turner, because it's where he lived at one time. That way, Turner Drive can be renamed in honour of Duhamel.

Plus there are no houses on A Street that get mail addressed to A Street.

“I think that would take care of it,” Vagnini said. “Meagan is in town. The renaming is taking place Friday and her family is here.”

The name change was approved unanimously, although a separate vote will have to be held to rename A Street.
