Greater Sudbury’s two Members of Parliament encourage Northerners who would like to share their view on the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) to participate in Parliament’s Canada-wide consultations.

The federal Liberal government has committed to hearing from all Canadians on the TPP before it takes a decision on whether or not to ratify the agreement, say Nickel Belt and Sudbury MPs Marc Serré and Paul Lefebvre.

“The Committee wishes to hear from groups and individuals from all walks of life,” said Serré. “That’s why, as Members of Parliament, we encourage you to engage with your government and share your view on the TPP.”

As part of its study, the committee is inviting Canadian individuals and organizations to provide written submissions that express their views on the TPP agreement.

The committee is also inviting Canadians to request to appear as a witness before the committee, either as an individual or as a representative of an organization. Currently, there is no deadline for the end of consultations.

“I was glad to hear that the House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade is consulting Canadians from coast to coast to coast on the TPP,” said Lefebvre.

“The Prime Minister committed to a public consultation on TPP during the election campaign. It’s an important issue and the voice of Sudburians needs to be heard in Ottawa.”

Canadians who wish to appear as a witness can make their request at any time during the study. They should provide their name and contact information to the Clerk of the Committee at: [email protected]

Written submissions should be emailed to the same address. Canadians who wish to provide a written submission in the context of the Committee’s TPP public consultation must do so before 11:59 p.m. on June 30.

The limit on the number of words for written submission has been removed. However, written submissions exceed 10 pages must be accompanied by a summary of no more than 1,500 words.

The Committee may decide to translate, distribute and/or publish only the summary.
