Local shutterbug scores cover shot

Gates Paquette stumbled across a sunrise on Gurd Lake just in time to snap a photo of the sun beaming across the water, peaking out from behind a leafy tree.

The hobby photographer from Garson said he trekked around the Grundy Lake Provincial Park lake, travelling south to east, to get the photo. He took many, and was happy to get one shot that stood out.

“You're bound to get one good one when you take a bunch,” he said. “You learn a little every shot.”

Without knowing it, Paquette later found out his wife submitted the photo to the Heart and Stroke Calendar Lottery.

When he found out it would be the cover image, he said “that's even better.”

The lottery calendar is released annually, offering up daily, weekly, monthly and special occasion cash prizes. Money raised from the sale of the calendars goes to supporting the work done by the provincial organization.

“Over 3,000 people in the Sudbury area are hospitalized each year for heart disease and stroke related conditions,” the foundation said.

The calendars make excellent gifts that give year round. For $25, every calendar is a chance at a prize. Orders received before Nov. 29 will ensure delivery before the holidays.
