First Nickel Inc. has resumed normal operations at its Lockerby Mine after the company was forced to shut down last week because of problems with one of the mine's shafts turned up in a Ministry of Labour inspection.

Production at the mine restarted at 6 p.m. April 29, after repair work on the shaft was completed.

The company said in a press release it does not anticipate that the break in production will have “any negative impact on second-quarter production.”

“I am very pleased with the Lockerby team's ability to quickly respond, assess and resolve the issues causing the interruption,” Thomas Boehlert, president and CEO of First Nickel, said in a press release.

“The dedication and co-operation of our employees and contractors bodes well as we continue to safely ramp-up the Lockerby mine to full production over the course of this year.”

“Over the past week, management and the union have worked very closely to address the issues identified by the ministry,” Mine Mill Local 598/CAW president Richard Paquin, who represents the workers at the mine, said in the press release.

“I'm very pleased that the safety of our members remains a top priority at the Lockerby Mine.”
