Students from Lockerby Composite School were able to canvas late into the night on Oct. 24 as they collected donations for pediatric cancer care in the name of Laura Cotesta, a former student who passed away from cancer in 1996 at age 18.

At the celebration assembly Thursday morning, it was announced that they had raised $44,500. Their 23-year total now surpasses $940,000.

All of the funds raised by the Kids Caring for Kids Cancer Drive supports pediatric oncology just up the road from Lockerby Composite School at the Northeast Cancer Centre.

“The spirit of the Lockerby Cancer Drive never ceases to amaze me,” said Tannys Laughren, executive director of the Northern Cancer Foundation.

“We can’t possibly be more proud of the Vikings. Their committee worked so hard to make the drive so successful for the twenty-third year running. The outpouring of community, grassroots support is so humbling.”

The Northern Cancer Foundation recognized all of the teachers and staff at Lockerby Composite School for their hard work, the Vikings and especially the students of the Kids Caring for Kids Committee for organizing and managing this event and the Greater Sudbury community for once again supporting the children all over Northeastern Ontario who come to the NECC for treatment.

"Last but certainly not least, we would like to thank Pina Cotesta for keeping Laura’s dream and memory close to her heart and close to ours," said a news release from NCF.
