Forty students from Lockerby Composite School will participate in a 30-hour famine on April 26-27.

“The famine will raise money that will go towards World Vision to help bring about positive change,” the school's principal, Heather Gaffney, said in a press release.

“The students will learn how difficult it is to get through the day on very little food. They will gain a better understanding of what nearly one billion people experience on a daily basis.”

During the 30-hour famine, students will hear guest speakers address challenges faced globally and locally.

Lori Adams from Minga for Maasai will share her first-hand experiences working on humanitarian aid in Africa. There will also be a presentation on the work of Sudbury's Inner City Home.

Students will have an opportunity to become part of the solution through the pledges they collect for World Vision.

During the 30-hour famine, students will learn that hunger is not just an issue in far away Third World countries, but in their very own city.

On April 27, students will gather for a group lunch to celebrate their success.

“The famine will nurture caring and compassion, among the many character traits we cultivate in Rainbow Schools,” Gaffney said.
