A flood watch has been issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) for the lower Wanapitei River, until May 21.

Residents along Wanapitei River down to the French River, are asked to keep a close watch on conditions, regularly check for updates on flood conditions and avoid fast-moving water.

The townships of Secord, Laura, Cox, Waldie, Allen and Struthers, may also be affected.

According to a press release by MNRF, the water levels of Wanapitei River are elevated due to ongoing melt and recent precipitation, which has caused high flows from Lake Wanapitei.

While dams along the river are being adjusted to accomodate these higher flows, the ministry said there is still a chance that water levels will rise in the near future.

As a result, there is a potential for flooding in low-lying areas.
