Laurentian University's school of engineering continued its domination of the Canadian Mining Games with its third championship title in the last four years.

Hosted over the Feb. 23 weekend by the University of British Columbia, in Vancouver, the 2002 Canadian Mining Games enabled students from ten Canadian universities to meet and compete.

On the line was the title of Top Mining/Metallurgy Students in Canada.

The following events were part of the competition: mine rescue, mineral processing design, tailings dam failure, jackleg drilling, mine design, rock mechanics, blasting, surveying, ventilation and a problem set.

Laurentian University students placed high in the events requiring small groups of people and excelled in the team-inclusive events, and secured a victory over a strong team from the University of Alberta.

Members of the Laurentian team include Tim Verlaan, Derek Kulyski, Luke Kempers, Tim Hunt, Craig Stuart, Richard Bartlett, Darren Mawhinney, Peter Lind, Curtis Deredin, Eila Kaukolin, Kamal Ughadpaga, Erin Legault-Séguin, Jay Rutledge, Amy Byers, James Kellestine and Colin Pegues.

Laurentian University has an impressive record with four gold, five silver and one bronze in the 12-year history of the Canadian Mining Games.

It has the best overall record at the competition since its launch.
