The Laurentian University Alumni Association is launching an initiative that encourages its members to log their volunteer hours over the course of two years to contribute to a goal of one million hours.

The project, which kicks off on Nov. 29, falls on Giving Tuesday, a day following Black Friday and Cyber Monday that supports the notion of giving back.

One Million Hours of Volunteerism is one of three flagship initiatives outlined in the Alumni Association’s 2016-2019 Strategic Plan “Strengthened.”

“The second goal in our strategic plan is to strengthen alumni culture; and members from our Board of Directors were in agreement that the best way to accomplish this was through positive community-building activities,” said Brandon Beeson, president of the Laurentian University Alumni Association’s board of directors.

Laurentian graduates and honorary alumni who live and volunteer anywhere in the world can take part in the initiative by logging their hours through an online platform.

“I’m particularly excited about this initiative because it’s so inclusive. As long as graduates have access to the Internet, they can participate,” said Beeson.

The social media campaign supporting the two-year project will allow organizations to share volunteer opportunities with graduates and for graduates to share their volunteer stories with the alumni community.

“We know that a large percentage of Laurentian alumni already volunteer their time to causes that are important to them,” said Rachel Meehan, Director of Alumni Relations at Laurentian University.

“This initiative will demonstrate the impact Laurentian alumni are making in the communities where they live. Realizing our graduates are busy, we’re simply asking that they log the volunteer hours they are already doing, not necessarily to take on anything more.

“If the project entices more graduates to volunteer or for volunteers to give more of their time, then we’re happy to know Laurentian alumni are benefitting communities around  the world.”
