Marymount Academy students heard first-hand on Nov. 5 what it's like to be a police officer.

Greater Sudbury Police school liaison officer Hally Willmot gave a presentation to Allison Cameron’s English classes. Willmot, who has been a police officer for 17 years, is also a published author. She wanted to show them that police are definitely approachable and not “just a uniform.”

The officer told the students she moved a lot as a child. Because of this, she took comfort in reading and writing, and is now a published author with her second book being launched very shortly.

She said it's important to believe in yourself and follow your dreams.

“I think the students were really interested to see a police officer who is also an author, and not a true crime or murder mystery author either, but a fantasy fiction author - not what most people would expect of a police officer,” said Cameron.

“It is a great lesson for my students to understand that there is more to all of us than meets the eye, and it is-also important to meet people in our very own community that can serve as inspiration and role models for our young women at MMA.”
