The coming weeks will require "making the right, albeit unpopular choices"

Mayor Brian Bigger is urging residents to remain vigilant in the fight against the spread of COVID-19 as cases in Ontario are surging once again.

Social distancing, hand washing and mask wearing were all among the recommendations that the mayor asked Sudburians to continue to follow as the fall season settles in.

“I just wanted to reiterate how important it is if you are out — be it for recreation, shopping, running errands or visiting — we must do it safely,” the Sept. 25 statement reads. “We have all seen the surge that is taking place across Ontario and most of the country, and it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to stop the spread of COVID-19. Wash your hands, follow the arrows in stores, keep six feet apart and always wear a mask.”

The city’s geography and lower population density makes distancing easier, the mayor said, and while everyone is likely getting tired of the safety measures, it is important to stay the course, Bigger added.

“The results of our collective efforts have allowed us to see restaurants reopen, people back at the gym, children returning to school and even our pools and parks are busy again. We are where we are today because we listened to the experts,” the statement reads.

With COVID-19 cases surging once again in southern Ontario, the public needs to continue to make “smart choices,” the mayor said.

“To maintain what we have and to beat back the second wave that is spreading, we need to make smart choices. We need to limit the amount of people we have in our houses to 10,” Bigger’s statement reads. “We need to respect our bubbles and we need to remember that if you are sick, have any symptoms or have been potentially exposed to anyone with symptoms that we need to stay home.”

Friends and fellow residents,

The autumn colours are out and it looks as if nature is granting us a few more warm days of beautiful weather. If you can, get out and get active this weekend, before we all know it, the snow will be flying and we'll begin settling in for a long Northern Ontario winter.

With that, I just wanted to reiterate how important it is if you are out - be it for recreation, shopping, running errands or visiting, we must do it safely. We have all seen the surge that is taking place across Ontario and most of the country, and it is incumbent upon each and every one of us to stop the spread of COVID-19. Wash your hands, follow the arrows in stores, keep six feet apart and always wear a mask.

Living in Greater Sudbury, we are fortunate that our geography and lack of density gives us the space to distance safely. That, coupled with the extremely hard work of all of us, has allowed our city to see a minimal number of cases and very limited spread for the most part since COVID-19 became prominent in Canada. The results of our collective efforts have allowed us to see restaurants reopen, people back at the gym, children returning to school and even our pools and parks are busy again. We are where we are today - because we listened to the experts.

To maintain what we have and to beat back the second wave that is spreading, we need to make smart choices. We need to limit the amount of people we have in our houses to 10. We need to respect our bubbles and we need to remember that if you are sick, have any symptoms or have been potentially exposed to anyone with symptoms that we need to stay home.

I will be the first to acknowledge that the coming weeks will require resolve and making the right, albeit unpopular choices with how we enjoy this last dose of warm weather. We have been resilient and strong since March. And it hasn't gone unnoticed. Earlier this month Premier Ford commented on the job we've done and the example we've set for Ontario to follow. Let's keep it up.

We are a strong community and we have done amazing work so far - we're winning, so let's not give up this late in the game or yield any room for this virus to spread throughout Greater Sudbury.

Sincerely,
Mayor Brian Bigger
City of Greater Sudbury
