Archdeacon Anne Germond was elected bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Algoma on Friday.

Germond is rector of the Church of the Ascension in New Sudbury, is the archdeacon of the Sudbury-Manitoulin Deanery and was recently installed as chancellor of Thorneloe University.

She's married to local oncologist Dr. Colin Germond.

Germond is a graduate of Thorneloe University's School of Theology and has served on Thorneloe's Board of Governors since 2002.

Germond will be consecrated and installed as bishop in February.

The Diocese of Algoma is part of the Anglican Church of Canada. It spans nearly 182,000 square kilometers and includes the regions of Thunder Bay and the north shore of Lake Superior, Sudbury, Manitoulin Island, North Bay, Muskoka, and Sault Ste. Marie, where the Cathedral and Diocesan Offices are located.

“I am both humbled and honoured to be elected Bishop of Algoma,” Germond said in a news release. “I look forward to serving this Diocese as its bishop and continuing my service to Thorneloe University as its chancellor.”

Germond's predecessor as bishop of Algoma is Stephen Andrews, who took a job as the principal of the Anglican theological college Wycliffe College in August.

Before becoming bishop, Andrews was the president of Thorneloe University for eight years.
