It was million-dollar Monday at the Northern
Ontario School of Medicine (NOSM) today, as Inco Ltd. and the
provincial government joined forces to pump $1 million into the

It's a wonderful way to start 2006, said Dr.
Roger Strausser, dean of the medical school.
Inco's donation of $500,000 was matched by the
province.
"This contribution to the bursary fund will
provide busaries for students for years and years to come, for the
future of health care here in Northern Ontario," Strausser said.
"The contributions made . . . really provide assurance that our
students will have the financial supports they need in order to
complete their studies."
The financial support for the bursary ensures
that students will be able to concentrate on their studies and not
be distracted by financial concerns, Strausser said.
Mark Cutifani, president of Inco's North American
and European operations, said his company's contributions were
about more than helping students pay off their debt.
"The (school of medicine) is educating and
training the physicians who will lead our health care system for
many years to come," said Cutifani. "The bursary campaign . . . is
helping ensure that economics alone do not stand in the way of any
student's success."
The other half of the $1 million came from the
province's Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC).
NOHFC announced in July of 2005 that it would equal any donations
made to the NOSM's bursary fund, up to $5 million.
