Miners Mayhem! Hundreds brave new obstacles, raise funds at 7th annual event

Some 400 participants took part in the annual miners mayhem

Approximately 400 people had a very messy start to their weekend as they rolled in to participate in the seventh annual Miners Mayhem mud run.

The parking lot was bustling with a sea of colourful athletic gear and tutus. Neighbours passed friendly challenges, while some friends simply cheered the participants.

Two best friends, Lisa Goddard and Angie Kirkey, were returning for the fourth year to get their hands dirty.

“This is such as fun event, and we have so much fun together doing the obstacles, so we keep coming back,” Lisa said.

For Lisa and Angie, the Miners Mayhem is a celebration as much as a challenge.

“Our birthdays are close together, so we have a figured a way to celebrate by staying active,” Lisa said.

“These obstacles never get boring; there is always something different,” Angie said.

Changing up things this year the Miners Mayhem decided to switch locations to Kivi Park and built a new obstacle course around it.

“There are 18 obstacles this year, a brand-new course, brand new trails and some single tracks, we have also added some tricky stuff this year,” Donna Smrek, course director, said.

Keeping up with the switch-up this year the Miners mayhem also joined forces with Northern Cancer Foundation’s MOVE fitness series.

“Each year anywhere up to $4,000 is given to the charities that we support, and this year numbers look good,” Smrek said.

Apart from supporting Northern Cancer Foundation they also help support local firefighters raise funds for the fight against muscular dystrophy.
