Ever noticed the blue flag that flies above the Bell Park Beach in Ramsey Lake? Ever wondered why?

Moonlight Beach will fly the Blue Flag this summer, joining Bell Park Beach as the second Sudbury beach to receive the international eco-certification.

The certification by Environmental Defence demonstrates the beach is managed sustainably and provides a safe place for the public to recreate. The flag also indicates the water quality is high.

“This Blue Flag designation is one more step we’ve taken in being world leaders in environmental initiatives,” Greater Sudbury Mayor Brian Bigger, said. “Our award-winning re-greening accomplishments, and now this second Blue Flag designation, continue our efforts to create a more sustainable community for future generations.”

This summer, 27 beaches and eight marinas across Canada will fly the Blue Flag. To receive a flag, beaches and marinas must meet high international standards in water quality, environmental management, environmental education and safety and services.

The Blue Flag program is administered in Canada by Environmental Defence and is managed internationally by the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).
